I finally made it to Denver after an early morning flight from Phoenix. Up at 4am. Here by 9am. Not sure why I felt the need to get here so damn early. Now I need a nap. But before I get to that I need to first gush over my shared accommodations with Dr. Diaz at the Sheraton Downtown. Very nice two room suite with gorgeous views out two sides of the room. Denver really is a beautiful city. We even have a sitting room with separate TV and what not. Very nice. I think I know what today`s video will be. I’m going to head down to the gym in a bit to get my workout in. Then I can drink some of that wine the Sheraton left for us. Yum. They left cheese too. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Assignment #1: Scavenger Hunt

List of Things to Get Started

1. Fill out the Student Information Form
2. Register for the Ning social network and complete the profile questions.
3. Introduce yourself to the class in the discussion forum on the Ning social network.
4. Add a friend on the network and write on his/her wall. Make sure it is a positive comment.
5. Watch the Orientation video in the START HERE area in Blackboard and write down the 3 keywords given in the video. The video is also on the course network.
6. Visit MyCompLab and register. You should have received a registration code in your textbook (The Brief Penguin Handbook, 3rd Ed.) purchased in the bookstore. If you do not have a textbook yet, you can buy one online for a little less. It will be an electronic copy of the text (e-book), and it will come with MyCompLab. Cost is $56.67. You can NOT use a used book for this course.
7. Join the ENG101 course on MyCompLab. The Course ID is Cooper153468C
8. Visit MyCompLab Online and take the Diagnostic 1. You must register for MyCompLab BEFORE you can take the diagnostic. Once registered, click the To Do tab and find the Diagnostic under My Assignments.
9. Watch the screencast How to Do Well in This Course in the START HERE section of Blackboard. Write down all the tips provided in the screencast.
10. Take the Orientation Quiz in the START HERE section in Blackboard. You will be asked all the information you learned while doing this assignment-scavenger hunt. Use your notes. If you don’t score 80% or better. Take it again.

That’s it. Once you’ve completed all the tasks, you will be notified by Dr. Cooper. You’ll also be ready to start the online/hybrid course. Good luck.

As a starting point for the semester, I’d like you to spend some time thinking and writing about yourself as a writer and reader. In other words, I’d like you to compose a profile or portrait of yourself as a reader and writer, including your reading and writing history and habits. This is the time to tell me, please, if you have any particular problems or difficulties with reading or writing. I would also like to know if English is not your first language.

Here are some questions to get you started; feel free to include any other information you think important.

What do you remember about being taught to write or being asked to write in school? What were your successes, pleasures, problems, or confusions? What memorable things, positive or negative, have people said to you about your writing? What feelings are associated for you with your memories of learning to write or with the activity of writing? What role does writing play now in your life, and what are your present attitudes about writing? What goals do you have for yourself as a writer, for this course and for the future? What has your experience with writing at SMCC or your high school been like so far?

Now think about the process you go through whenever you face a writing task. What kinds of pre-writing activities do you engage in—reading, jotting, note-taking, daydreaming, procrastinating, munching, meditating, jogging, napping, preparing a place to write, gathering writing materials, talking with friends or colleagues about the writing you are about to do and your ideas for it? What sort of materials or surroundings do you prefer when you write? Do you draft in longhand or at a keyboard? Do you write successive drafts and revise heavily, or do you produce a more nearly finished version as you go along? Do you re-read your writing, silently or aloud, during the process of composing? What reference guides do you usually use—handbook, dictionary, thesaurus, spell checker? Where do you go for advice or response to your writing?

Are you a reader? Do you read for pleasure? What kinds of reading do you most enjoy? What do you remember as the best book you ever read?

Finally, I’d like to know what led you to take this course. What are your expectations of the course, of me, of yourself, of other students? What do you hope to learn and to accomplish in your semester of Freshman Composition?

Your profile of yourself as a reader and writer should be posted as Journal #1 on your network blog and on your writing portfolio on MyCompLab. To learn how to post to these sites, view the Assn. #2 screencasts on Blackboard. I look forward to reading what you write.

• include a Rhetorical Situation cover page with your name/heading on top and the details of the five elements of the Rhetorical Situation. These details should be thorough, 3-5 sentences for each (10%).

• be a reflective essay written on a topic that fits the module theme: education. You may choose one of the articles in the Module I Readings list to reflect on, including the ones we’ve read and discussed in class or you may choose your own inspiration for reflecting on education.

• be 600-700 words (2-3 pages) (90%)

• be typed and follow the essay format guidelines in the syllabus

• be posted to the MyCompLab site by midnight on the due date.
